Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle: Ideas for Your Old Pillowcases

When your household linens get worn out and replaced, what do you do with your old ones? Instead of simply throwing them away, you can repurpose your old pillowcases! There are so many creative ways to reuse old pillowcases around your Sugar Land rental home. Here are some ideas to inspire some creativity of your own!

Floor cushion. Floor pillows or chairs can be made from old pillowcases! Simply sew three or four pillowcases together along the long edges, stuff with pillows or other filler, and sew closed. Use these cushions for your next sleepovers or use them in your game room or reading nook.

Dog bed. Old pillowcases make great covers for dog beds, too! Dog beds can start to look torn up over time. These old pillowcases can become a pretty dog bed cover that you can remove and wash. Or get some new stuffing and make a new dog bed out of an old pillowcase. Doing either of these is a great way to save money!

Apron. Patterns on older linen often look adorable as wearables, like an apron. Cut and sew the fabric of an old pillowcase and make yourself a fun and functional apron you can actually use. Aprons come in different sizes and styles, so you can easily pick one to customize.

Laundry bag. Because pillowcases are shaped the way they are, they can easily transform into different useful items. You can turn any old pillowcase into a laundry bag. You can do this by just adding a drawstring around the top opening. You’ll just need to fold the top edge over, sew, and then thread a cord through. This pillowcase laundry bag is a perfect companion for traveling or for any small space.

Reusable shopping bag. If you have a few extra minutes, you can turn that old pillowcase into a cute reusable shopping bag. There will be a bit more cutting and sewing involved to make the handles, but it should be no problem for someone who knows how to use a needle.

Chair Covers. Another easy upcycle for old pillowcases is to make decorative chair covers for your home. A set of vintage or decorative pillowcases with a pretty pattern would be perfect for this. Simply slip them over the backs of chairs to transform your room. You can also tie a ribbon or cord around the chair back to keep the covers securely in place.

Book tote. Do you carry books around? That old pillowcase can be of help! In just a few hours, you can make an easy and cute book tote. You will need to cut strips from the top part of the pillowcase and sew them into handles. This fun and the functional tote is something you can bring anywhere.

Dress or cute top. Finally, what could be sweeter than a favorite pillowcase turned into a child’s dress or summer top? There are many available patterns for a simple dress, skirt, or top that will be perfect to wear on warm summer days.
